Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown missiles at the vice president who doubles as the head of the economic management team, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over the depreciation of the cedi and the decision to seek IMF assistance.
Addressing delegates in Kintampo North constituency as part of his campaign tour, Kennedy Agyapong highlighted that the exchange rate was Ghc4 to a $1 when they assumed power, but it has risen to Ghc12 to $1. “For someone who claims to be a strategist, the dollar was Ghc4 equivalent when we took over power, today the dollar is Ghc12. You think you are a strategist? Excuse me, strategist”, he said. Mr. Agyapong also mentioned the recent decision of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to approve a $3b loan facility to the country indicating that those who led the country to seek assistance from the IMF should not claim to be strategists “They go about claiming to be strategists; strategist what have brought us here today. Ghana is the only place that those who send the country to IMF claim to be strategists”.
Mr. Agyapong also warned his fellow NPP flagbearers to engage in a clean campaign, stating that he would respond in kind if they attacked him. “If NPP people don’t engage in clean campaign, they will be in trouble because for me, when you say something, I will reply to you”.
Kennedy Agyapong is of the view that he is the best person to take over the reigns of the country as all the other candidates are part of the mess created by the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He threw light in his businesses of which he claims to have employed over 7000 individuals which makes him more competent than the others.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set November 4, 2023, as the date for its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer for the general elections in 2024.
