A leaked audio recording believed to be from some top-ranking officers of the Ghana Police Service and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has provoked a public outcry, particularly from members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Although the party is yet to state its official position on the alleged recording, the tough-speaking Volta Regional Deputy Organizer, Mr. Elliot Wogbe has indicated the readiness of the NDC to resist any attempt from the NPP through some officers of the Police Service to rig the 2024 general elections, as revealed in the alleged recording.
In the early hours of Tuesday July 11, 2023, a purported secret recording on plans to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, in order to pave way for them to rig the next election for the NPP was widely circulated on various social media platforms. A voice believed to be that of an unidentified top ranking police officer was heard planning on ways to get the IGP out before the 2024 elections, else the NPP will find it difficult in winning the election. Commissioner of Police, George Alex Mensah is alleged to be the senior police officer at the centre of the controversy of which DFS Live News cannot independently verify.
Reacting to the development, the firebrand party organizer warned the political actors in the Police Service to desist from carrying out any planned election rigging agenda from the governing NPP because the NDC will be ready for a face-off with any individual or group whose intention is to rig the 2024 general elections. “All I can say is that if the man speaking is telling is that because they’re NPP police, they’ll do everything to stop Mahama from coming back to power, then they should also be ready for what we’ll meet them with”, he disclosed. ” I trust in the work my regional executives are carrying out, and this must serve as a wake-up call to the NDC. We must demonstrate to the NPP that we’re a party born out of a revolution and can’t sit for anyone to come intimidate us”, the charged deputy organizer cautioned.
“The current IGP if we [make] a mistake and take him to the [2024] elections, it will not help us. It will not help us at all and I will not mind if the position is not given to me, but that man [should be] changed”, a portion of the audio allegedly from the senior police officer expressed. The alleged senior police officer was heard in the audio saying, “God forbid if the NDC wins…” just before suggesting that Dr. Dampare is in the good books of the NDC, the more reason something urgent needs to be done remove him before the election because “He [Dr. Dampare] won’t help the party at all”, the audio explains.
The Ghana Police Service is yet to officially communicate to the general public on the development regarding the authenticity of the recording and the actions taken thus far. DFS Live News will bring its readers any further development on this matter as well as the reactions from the National Peace Council, the Government and the opposition parties.
