NDC youth wing condemns KT Hammond, announce mass action to mobile youth

Accra, 28th September 2022- The National Democratic Congress (NDC) condemns in no uncertain terms, the comments of KT Hammond, Member of Parliament for Adansi-Asokwa following the booing of the failed president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo at the Independence Square during the Global Citizen Show. Ordinarily, such commentary from a known loose talker will not elicit a response but seeing how he deliberately sought to denigrate young people of this country, he must be called out.

The youth of this country have shown sheer grit and courage in weathering the many hardships visited upon them by the Akufo Addo-Bawumia administration. It is thus disingenuous for any old timer to question their democratic right to show their disapproval for the worst President we have seen in the Fourth Republic.

This is not the first time KT Hammond nor the NPP has sought to question our hardworking youth. Akufo Addo, after numerous calls for him to reshuffle his ministers, boldly declared that the calls were from unemployed youth. As shameful as that sounded, the President had his praise singers defending him. What we see from that instance, is a deliberate attempt by the NPP to downplay and undermine efforts of young people to demand accountable governance.

As we speak, various NABCO cohorts are owed months of payments, National Service personnel payments have not been settled, Teacher Trainees and Nursing students have not been paid their due allowances. The resultant effect of Akufo Addo’s failure to provide jobs for young people and improve our economy is what was displayed at Independence Square.

We expect the Akufo Addo-Bawumia administration to view this event as free social research on the mood of the country. From all indications, our nation is on the precipice of unrest and this government must sit up and change the course of this nation.

KT Hammond and his ilk must know that if the current situation in the country does not get any better, any agitation and civil unrest will begin with the political class. He must retract his comments, apologize to the youth and focus on helping his government FIX the economy.

The New Patriotic Party must call KT Hammond to order. Failure to do so will mean their tacit endorsement of his reckless comments.

The youth of this country are responsible and hardworking; some of the best start-ups and businesses in the country are led by young people. Young people who bear the brunt of the incompetence of this government have every right to show their disapproval of government’s failure. If situations do not improve, the NDC will announce a series of mass actions geared towards mobilizing young people to agitate and picket at the Flagstaff house, Parliament and other state agencies. We will not relent in ensuring our future is not jeopardized by grand theft schemes.

Aluta Continua!

GEORGE OPARE ADDO,

NATIONAL YOUTH ORGANIZER.
