Investing in education plays a pivotal role in the positive transformation of societies and the equal prioritization of the health of the people builds the human capital that is critical for the society’s development. The MP for Tamale Central constituency, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed seems to be taking the bull by the horn as he focuses on these two key facets. i.e education and health. He does this in a bid to position his constituents for a better and a more secured future.
When the DFS Live News Team caught up with the endearing politician who is a Development Planner by profession, it was an inspiring and heartwarming conversation about the development agenda for his constituents covering education, health and other social interventions executed or in the offing in his one and half years as a Member of Parliament for the Constituency which is located in the Tamale Metropolitan district of the Northern region of Ghana.
INVESTING FOR THE FUTURE THROUGH EDUCATION
When the Tamale Metropolitan Director of education confirmed that there has been an improvement in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E) results as compared to the previous year, it dawned on the Member of Parliament; who again is a trained teacher, that his efforts in organizing free extra classes as well as providing some basic learning materials for the final year students in the Constituency have yielded dividends. Taking off from completing ongoing projects of school buildings left behind by his predecessor, the former deputy information minister had a lot more coming. “I organized free extra classes for 1,200 students [in the constituency] and I did that because the Metro education director indicated to me that students within the Tamale Metropolis perform poorly as against students from other Metropolis in the BECE year-on-year in the Region. I saw it to be unfathomable that Tamale, the capital was facing this challenge”, the lawmaker asserted. As a way of motivating the pupils, the MP; for the first time in the Constituency, provided transport services to move all pupils to and from their various examination centres.
Hon. Murtala Mohammed’s investment in education also extends to students in tertiary institutions. In line with his vision of having more medical doctors from the constituency, he has provided scholarships to some students in the Medical Sciences to help realize that dream. Ten medical students have been given scholarships in the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Development Studies and have had their fees fully paid for the entire duration of their course. “The next academic year I’m going to pay the fees of ten more medical students and the next two years I’m going to pay another ten, so the number will be thirty (30).
The Former deputy Trade and Industry minister accounted. He further stated that plans are underway to set up mobile libraries in all 18 Wards in the Constituency to promote reading habits among the young and old.
HEALTH AND OTHER SOCIAL INTERVENTIONS
As a way of solving the perennial water problems in the Constituency, the Member of Parliament has constructed twenty-five (25) mechanized boreholes within the eighteen wards to ensure the availability of water all year round. He has; in partnership with a Foundation, built a modern and fully furnished clinic and constructed several Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds for his constituents in a year and a half as a member of Parliament. He is set to cut the sod for the construction of another health facility this weekend in the Constituency, a project financed by the MP’s Common Fund.
